Beatriz Haddad Maia is 28-22 this year, a semi-final appearance in Abu Dhabi followed by quarter-final defeats in Madrid and Strasbourg.

The Brazilian started the hard court swing with early exits in Toronto and Cincinnati. She didn’t face a Top 30 player in Cleveland, getting to the final where she lost in 3 sets to World No.98 McCartney Kessler.

The 28-year-old had a slow start at the US Open before coming home strong to beat Elina Avanesyan 4-6 6-0 6-2. She has kept it going, thrashing Sara Sorribes Tormo and Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets.

Haddad Maia got past Caroline Wozniacki 6-2 3-6 6-3 in the fourth round, winning 38% of her 2nd serves and saving 13/16 break points.

Karolina Muchova is 11-4 this year, competing in just five tournaments before travelling to New York. She withdrew before the Eastbourne International quarter-finals and lost to Paula Badosa in the Wimbledon first round.

The 28-year-old had an easy run to the final in Palermo where she lost 6-4 4-6 6-2 to Qinwen Zheng. Her final match on clay resulted in a first round defeat to Leylah Fernandez at the Olympics.

The Czech warmed up for the US Open in Cincinnati, beating Dayana Yastremska before a 5-7 6-4 6-2 second round defeat to Jessica Pegula.

Muchova hasn’t dropped a set in New York, starting by beating Katie Volynets 6-3 7-5, Naomi Osaka 6-3 7-6 and Anastasia Potapova 6-4 6-2. She took out 5th seed Jasmine Paolini 6-3 6-3, winning 69% of her 2nd serves and saving 2/3 break points.
